It’s All About the Base - August 2023

I believe in diversity on the concert stage and would love to share terrific compositions with you.

COMPOSER OF THE MONTH
Joe Jaxson

I LOVE exploring new music! Especially when I find super interesting, nice, hard-working, young and motivated up-and-coming talent. Today, I am thrilled to introduce you to Joe Jaxson.

A couple of years ago, I had the opportunity to sit on a panel “Bridging the Repertoire Divide,” spearheaded by my friend and colleague Dr. Cory Meals, Assistant Professor of Music Education at University of Houston. Alongside me in this project were other committee guests which included: Dr. Clifton Croomes, Associate Director of Bands and Director of the Longhorn Band at University of Texas at Austin, Butler School of Music, Corey Graves, Head Band Director at Roma Middle School (TX), and Ogechi Ukazu, Director of Bands at University of Wyoming.

We had the great privilege to discuss numerous young underrepresented composers for this granting project. I throughly enjoyed learning about and listening to music of the almost 100 composers who were new to me.

Last year, I was looking for a new composition to perform with one of my orchestras and had a specific need for instrumentation. I thought it would be fun to see if one of the composers would be willing to help Seattle Collaborative Orchestra with our need.

Fortunately, my very first call was to Joe Jaxson.

Long story short, he re-orchestrated one of his smaller compositions to fit our instrumental needs and we performed the premiere to his new version of Persevering in our May 2022 concert - all while finishing up his undergraduate degree at James Madison University. Currently he is working towards his Master’s in Composition at the University of Texas.

It will be fun to see where his compositional voice will lead him next.

Compositions I would love to share by Joe Jaxson:

1. Fanfare for the 21st Century (brass band)
2. Prologue for String Orchestra
3. Safety, A Fluttered Heart for Wind Band

All terrific compositions for a variety of ensembles.
