Anna’s Listening! Week 6 - Judith Weir

It has been an absolute pleasure to listen to the works of Judith Weir this week. Much of her music is influenced by poetry, philosophy, and nature, which is clearly conveyed in her compositions.

One fun view into Weir’s life is that in 2014, she was chosen to be the first female Master of the Queen’s Music, a position in the Royal Household of the Sovereign in the United Kingdom. Fancy!!! Originally this post served the monarch of England where they directed the court orchestra and composed music as needed.

Compositions that I have enjoyed include:

Forest - The beginning is gorgeous and has beautiful viola and cello solos! The musical concept of “sprouting” blossoms throughout the composition (no pun intended). This would be a great composition for an excellent University music program and up.

Natural History – I love this piece – a definite “Must Listen”! Set for soprano and large orchestra, texts are taken from Chinese philosophical literature. There are four movements: Horse, Singer, Swimmer, Fish/Bird.

Still, Glowing – Weir considers this her “one and (so far) only attempt at writing ‘ambient music’ and from the excerpt I heard, it is lovely. This is a composition for excellent high school ensembles and above. The better in tune the more relaxing . Not technically difficult, but truly if with a professional ensemble, it would be magical in the right setting.

For the cost of a good cup of coffee per month, you can get quick access to awesome compositions such as these. Additionally, you will find a great place to explore, find repertoire for the needs of your ensemble, as well as get terrific ideas for concert programming. Contact me if you have any questions.

It is a new site, but it will continue to get better.
